Maria Troulis, DDS, MS

Professor & Surgeon of Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery, MGH/MGB, the Walter C. Guralnick Distinguished Professor of OMFS, HSDM/HMS. Troulis earned her master’s degree and degree of dental surgery from McGill University. She completed residencies at Royal Victoria Hospital and Montreal General Hospital before coming to the Massachusetts General Hospital as a clinical/research fellow in Pediatric Craniomaxillofacial Surgery and has remained part of the MGH/MGB/Harvard community. She has changed clinical OMFS by pioneering the use of MIS techniques, both distraction osteogenesis and endoscopic procedures. Troulis serves as a teacher at HMS/HSDM. She has served as OMFS program director & department chair. Her love and enthusiasm for teaching earned her Harvard’s Clifford Barger Award for Excellence in Mentoring and Distinguished Senior Faculty Award.
 
Currently, she is promoting the education and use of minimally invasive surgery and she is promoting the next generation of surgeon-scientists, especially women. Troulis leads teams on research rare tumors, clear cell odontogenic carcinoma of the jaw and clear cell carcinoma of the salivary gland. These tumors have a preponderance of clear cell histology, translocations in the EWSR1 gene to the CREB family of transcription factors. Both have a protracted clinical course and a predilection to females in the 4th decade.
